Task 5...

Essay Plan

Introduction:
Discuss the development in storylines of mental health

Point 1: stigma that is assossicated with mental illness, and how much of that is largley shown through media texts
Point 2: what texts are going to be looked at

Para 1:
Why is the horror genre so popular?

‘One popular theory is that horror films touch on emotions that other films don't’

Point 1: explore different relms of human needs - hypodermic needle theory
Point 2: encourages mainstream audience - psychographics
(T)

Para 2:
Discuss why the horror genre has such conventions, and why they are used over again.

‘they were formulaic, they contained conventions and they were repetitive. Consequently, they could easily be recycled over and over gain, promising standardised consistency. Once a formula had been tried and tested, it was hoped that future success could be granted’ (G)

Point 1: future success- more guarantee of financial success
Point 2: audience expectattions
Point 3: props, setting (over the top/outrageous/ individual- single out characters)

Para 3:
How the genre has developed with mental illness – 'Psycho', mysterious didn’t show much characteristics, whereas 'Cube' & 'Shutter Island' shows in depth how they act?

Point 1 : how audiences may have become desensitised, therefore needing more of a scare
Point 2 : how characters are actually shown- stereotypical
Some contextual analysis – (ML)

Para 4:
The effect on what these portrayals have on the audience - stigma
Cultivation theory

'people labeled mentally ill experience negative societal reactions'
'respondents reject the mentally ill'
'film has the power to influence people's beliefs on a mass scale, therefore it can be argued that filmmakers have a responsibility to present such portrayals more accurately and conscientiously. That said, it's important to remember that cinema is fiction and does not seek to be accurate at all times, nor is it the only medium to be creative with the truth.’
'The combined effect of massive television exposure by viewers over time subtly shapes the perception of social reality for individuals and, ultimately, for our culture as a whole’

Point 1:
those who watch these sterotypes, may infact just believe these views
Point 2:
The media is a huge influence

Para 5:
how those that are mentally are represented across the media: film as a platform
- 'Racheal Getting Married'
- 'Running With Scissors'
contextual analysis

what effect this has on the audience when they are in particular genres' hence why is the horror genre so popular using these storylines than other genre's.

'Horror films are designed to scare and disgust viewers with evil characters, plots and events that can range from realistic to completely supernatural'
